About Neck Pain

Most neck pain is due to either muscle tension or a minor infections. Excessive neck strain of a "kink" in the neck (caused by turning the head too quickly or lying in an awkward position) can cause pain from a muscle spasm.

Minor infections that cause swollen lymph glands in the neck, such as strep throat or Tonsillitis can also produce pain in the neck or throat.

However, in some cases, neck pain can be a sign of more serious infection. Neck pain, combined with a stiff neck (where a child cannot bend her neck forward or backward)can be a sign of meningitis.

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is one of the most-feared infectious illnesses in children, but fortunately it is a rare disease! Meningitis is the swelling of the meninges (the membrane that surrounds the brain and the spine)and is caused by either a bacterial or viral infection. However, the bacterial version of meningitis is the more dangerous of the two infections and can be life-threatening if the child is not treated quickly.

Symptoms

Symptoms and signs of meningitis

At first, meningitis can look just like a cold or the flu and may be accompanied by other symptoms like coughing, headache and sore throat. After a while, the child's fever will rise and she may begin to experience chills and complain of joint and muscle pains. Some children will also have a headache and will be vomiting.

There are several other symptoms that can alert you to the fact that your child may have meningitis.

Skin Bleeding Rash

The first symptom is the presence of tiny bright-red spots (otherwise known as petechiae). These tiny dots are small hemorrhages (or sites of internal bleeding). Unlike the types of rashes associated with other infections, these skin hemorrages will not fade, or blanch, when pressed with a fingertip or glass. Over time, these spots may increase in number and size.

Neck or Back Stiffness

Another danger sign of meningitis is neck or back stiffness. If your child has a fever and a headache and cannot bend her chin down towards her chest, contact your doctor immediately.

Meningitis in Infants

Be aware that very young children, especially babies, may not have any clear symptoms of meningitis. A baby may not have any sign of neck stiffness or rashes. An infant under 2 months old may not even have a fever when suffering from a serious infection. On the contrary, the baby's body temperature may be lower than normal. Infants with meningitis will be sluggish, fretful, and irritable, may not want to be touched, and may struggle to eat. They may also be vomiting.
